IT Staff Insights

Our greatest natural resource is not the sum of our individual technical skills. It is the uniqueness of our talented staff. Here we present short stories about a few important people who strive to embody our motto to Deliver, Lead & Innovate.

Handal Abdelrahim, Media Technology Services

Handal is proud he is a Sagittarius. And with good reason, this sign has the definitive characteristic of always seeking to study and learn new things. Handal is naturally enthusiastic, optimistic and inquisitive. As a firm Bronx supporter, he loves the Yankees, teaching and creating videos. A digital film school graduate, Handal is always willing to help our faculty and staff, makingHandal a real asset to MTS. He is involved in the full spectrum of Media Technology Services activities and has a passion for creativity from:

* Assisting faculty with making films/documentaries including one related to men in prison.
* Assisting with the 200+ events handled by MTS annually.
* Providing customer service assistance at the MTS front desk.
* Assisting with smart classroom renovations and work requests.

One of Handal’s Experiment to Learn (E2L) projects is to build a smart classroom single-handedly and provide suggestions on how to improve classroom technology.

Magda Soto, MMC Facility Coordinator

The name Magda has several origins. One derivation of her name means praiseworthy – quite a fitting description for this competent, practical and high-achieving individual. A graduate of Lehman College in Journalism and Communications, I sat down with this dynamic, energetic and supportive personality to understand what makes Magda such an asset to the outstanding team at the Multimedia Center (MMC). Magda’s work responsibilities are as comprehensive as her bright smile and these include:

* Management of day to day operations for the Multimedia Center.
* Production, videography, photography & sound aspects.
* Creating and maintaining relevant calendars of events and classes for the MMC.
* Reserving MMC spaces and assisting with special events.

Elkin Urrea, Data & Web Applications Analyst

Elkin was born under the sign of Capricorn. These individuals have very high standards for achievement and are distinguished by their honesty, dedication and perseverance for excellence. And these traits are perfectly personified in Elkin. A Ph.D. gradute in Electrical Engineering from the CUNY Graduate Center, he worked and studied at the same time. Elkin is involved with designing, coding, testing, implementating and the maintaining of Lehman-produced applications.His accomlishments and interests are:

* One of the original initiators of the Bronx EdTech Conference at Hostos College.
* A frequent presenter at CUNY IT Conferences.
* Winner of 2016 and 2017 CUNY IT Awards for automation initiatives.
* A CUNY community leader and a maverick for new ideas.
* A top soccer player Wednesdays at the Old Gym Building.
* Writer and publisher of academic papers.

I asked him why not become a faculty member and he remarked, “my passion is for coding” and this translates itself in all the applications he produces – and our good fortune to have this talented staff member!

Sharanjit Sahi, Web Developer & Business Analyst

Sharanjit was born under the sign of Aries. The characterisitics of Aries are: strength, courage, determination, confidence, enthusiasm, optimism, honesty and an implacable passion for their work. Of course, these qualities are in abundance in Sharanjit. She carefully explained to me about what goes on behind the scenes of creating those beautiful yet functional web pages that the web team at Lehman are famous for producing. Our Lehman web pages represent an important way to communicate to our community and the world. She is very knowledgeable and excited about a new CMS (Content Management System) set to launch web development into the next generation of management and uniformity. The new CMS will make it easier for our customers to manage their web pages and content. Yet this is only possible because of the careful planning, preparation and execution of the web team. Sharanjit is also a buisness analyst, a central point of contact for our customers, listening to their needs, advising of the best solutions, preparing the suitable web design, making modifications and supporting the maintenance of sites.

Like many of her peers, Sharanjit is a full-time working mom, yet she finds time to stay fit. Her favorite exercises are the elliptical machine and the stairmaster.

Dr. Joseph Medved, Director IT Application Security

Joseph Medved has his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the Moscow Institute of Technology in Russia. He has worked for over twenty-eight years at Lehman College. His distinguished career began in 1969 right after he was born…not really…yet his youthful outlook and adaptability were evident during our afternoon conversation. As a leader he is always researching, thinking, planning and creating. What is he researching? Methods for increasing the awareness and understanding of application security among our customers. What is he thinking? About data governance, teaching others about the best practices involved in developing a governance framework, and about encryption, how to protect non-public information. What is he planning and preparing…like most of Lehman’s managers a lot of things at once. One of them is updating the cybersecurity site for Lehman College to include the most current events. And preparing to speadhead a campaign to both increase customer awareness and understanding of cybersecuirty. And what is he creating, a safer more secure IT experience for our customers.

Where are We Now

with Russell Taylor

The Greek philosopher, Socrates, differentiated himself from others by focusing on how people should behave. Russell Taylor is our IT sage though his interest is in how technology behaves and why. Recently, Russell was quietly involved in an IT Experiment to Learn (E2L) initiative regarding Bitlocker, an encryption tool for personal computers. Using the scientific method to conduct his experiment, the problem was defined as why Bitlocker encrypted newer 64 bit computers and, at times, faltered with older 32 bit machines. His quest for knowledge continued and the problem was solved by turning-on a chip nestled in the computer. The IT division thrives through continuous exploration, discovery and sharing of new findings.

Help Desk Part-Time Staff

The part-time staff of the Help Desk is an integral part of IT service delivery at Lehman College. These talented, trained Lehman students and graduates are described as the face of IT, interacting daily with our students, faculty and staff. Amicable, patient and professional summarizes their demeanor. Ever ready to assist, their duties include informing and solving everyday IT issues at the Computer Center and campus wide. In the picture, supervisor Maria Garcia second from left, is flanked by a small sample of the part-time Help Desk assistants.Frequently requested help from customers include:

* E-mail, how to access accounts & reset passwords
* Printing assistance
* How to use MS Office
* Where do I find this…on campus
* Assistance with setting-up Wi-Fi on devices
* CUNYfirst questions
* Basic help with Blackboard and just about any other IT question you could think of…

Diane Morgante added the front desk received a new card reader designed to scan digital student IDs on Lehman 360. Add this to the LehmanQ pilot being conducted with the Help Desk. So let’s review the equation: Great Staff + Digital IDs on Lehman 360 + LehmanQ = Faster & Better Service. This explains why there are so many smiles in the picture. IT is seeking to understand customer needs, expectations, and perspectives and we work to deliver effective solutions with a smile!
