Corbin Hill Farm Share Returns to Lehman

Corbin Hills Farms offers fresh produce to the Lehman community.

The Corbin Hill Road Farm Share will return to the Lehman campus on June 18 for another season of fresh and affordable produce. Located under a tent on Shuster Walk, the Farm Share will be available to members of the community through mid-November every Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m.

Whether it’s apples, beets, onions, collard greens, cucumbers or summer squash, all the produce is sustainably grown in Schoharie County, N.Y. and other parts of the state, and is harvested the day prior to sale.

Corbin Hill Road Farm hopes to bring its community-supported agriculture model to areas of Harlem and the Bronx where residents have little access to sustainable and affordable food.

“While it is similar to a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) group, it is slightly different because you can pay by the week, put your share on vacation any week you can’t make pick-up, and join anytime during the season if you miss the first-day cutoff,” explains Carey King, director of Communications and Education at Corbin Hill Food Project. “We hope this can be the start of a strong movement for food justice in the northwest Bronx.”

Prices are based on income levels. Members can apply for a reduced price share and pay in cash, checks, or food stamps. Participants can register online. Registration must be completed by June 6 to pick up a share on the program’s opening day. After that, registration will be ongoing.

According to the Corbin Hill Farm website, their produce is two to three times cheaper than a local New York City supermarket. A $18 medium share will feed one to two people and contain about seven to nine types of seasonal items per week. With a $27 share, a member receives from nine to eleven types of seasonal items, which can feed a family of four for a week.

In the fall, the farm will sell antibiotic-free, hormone-free, cage-free turkeys just in time for Thanksgiving. Corbin Hill’s Web store will also offer produce wholesale in bulk, an extra fruit share, and egg share. In case of bad weather, the Corbin Hill stand will move just outside the Student Cafeteria in the Music Building.
