Children’s Musical: ‘Wonderful Flight to the Mushroom Planet’ May 17–19

The Music Department will present a musical adaption of Eleanor Cameron’s popular children’s book Wonderful Flight to the Mushroom Planet. Produced and directed by Professor Penny Prince, performances will take place on Thursday, May 17, at 12 p.m. and 7 p.m.; May 18, at 12 p.m.; and May 19 at 2 p.m. in Room 306 of the Music Building. Originally published in 1954, Wonderful Flight to the Mushroom Planet is the science fiction fantasy story about two young boys who are eager to explore worlds beyond earth. When the boys answer a newspaper ad seeking a spaceship, they meet Mr. Bass, a scientist who encourages the boys to build the spaceship and travel to a distant moon called “Basidium” and save the inhabitants who are slowly dying. Characters include a chicken, a family of scientists, and some amazing fungi.

The production will feature original music written by Professor Prince and a script by playwright Jeffrey Beer. A graduate of the Manhattan School of Music, Professor Prince earned her Ph.D. in music education from the Steinhardt School at NYU.
