When my friend Elaine Rivera died, it felt almost like the end of a fireworks show, when the smoke hangs in the air and crowds walk slowly home. The fun was over in a flash. Elaine was the life of the party, the girl who urged you to stay for just one more drink, a journalist who could splash life into a good story. She was also, as it turned out, an alcoholic whose drinking was so severe it corroded her liver until it just stopped working.

Remembering Elaine Rivera: Lehman to Host Memorial Service on December 7

Elaine Rivera, a member of the faculty in the Journalism, Communication, and Theatre Department, passed away last weekend. She was 54. Rivera joined the faculty at Lehman College in 2009 as a substitute lecturer, bringing nearly thirty years of experience at top news organizations around the country, including Time magazine, the Washington Post, and WNYC Radio. One year after joining Lehman, she was promoted to the rank of Distinguished Lecturer.

Remembering Albert Bermel: Longtime Lehman Professor, Author, and Theatre Critic

Albert Bermel, who chaired Lehman’s Speech and Theatre Department from 1988-1994 and was a celebrated author and theater critic, passed away on October 5, 2013. He was 85. When Bermel joined the Lehman faculty in 1970, he was a respected theatre critic for The New Leader and a published playwright, author, and translator of classical works for the modern theater.
