Professor Victoria Sanford was quoted in today’s New York Times‘s story announcing that former Guatemalan dictator Rios Montt will stand trial for genocide and war crimes committed during the country’s bloody civil war in the early 1980s. Dr. Sanford, of the College’s Anthropology department, is an internationally recognized expert on the Guatemala Genocide of 1982-83.

While some in Guatemala still deny that the deaths of 200,000 villagers in the 1980s constituted war crimes, the United Nations disagrees. A U.N. commission found that the Guatemalan military “carried out ‘acts of genocide’” the Times reported.
