The weather was sunny and perfect for Lehman College’s annual employee barbecue June 28 when Lehmanites came out to celebrate the end of a very busy academic year.
Long lines queued up to partake in summery food fare, including hot dogs, hamburgers, fried chicken, potato salad, and offerings for vegetarians and the more health conscious among the revelers. A D.J. provided entertainment; some partyers danced, others played volleyball in the sun or sat underneath tents to try their luck at cards or “Pick-a-Prize” Po-Ke-No. But everyone, no matter what they ate or did, enjoyed the annual day that has become an eagerly awaited event on the Lehman calendar.
And, of course, there was the much-anticipated Employee BBQ Raffle with prizes from generous sponsors, including the New York Yankees and New York Mets, local small businesses like Giovanni Restaurant on the Grand Concourse, Loeser’s “Hebrew National” Deli at W. 231 St. and Broadway, and KBBQ Restaurant and Little Caesars, both located on West Kingsbridge Road.
The first-place cash prize of $385 went to Margaret Klinesmith of Undergraduate/Online Studies. James Parker of Early Childhood Education scored the four Yankee tickets, while Andrew Scolarino of Buildings and Grounds took home the Mets tickets.
Yolanda Torres of the Lehman College Foundation won a KindleFire, and three staffers—Joseph Parone of Buildings & Grounds, Brenda Perez of Continuing & Professional Studies, and Madeline Soto of the Library each won a year-long membership to the APEX.
“It was a great effort,” says Alice Jenkins, assistant to the vice president for Administration and Finance, who singlehandedly organizes the event every year. “Everyone had a good time. This event could not take place without the enthusiastic support of so many of our campus offices, as well as the generous donations of our sponsors.”
Jenkins wanted to especially thank Dr. Martin Zwiren of the APEX, Eva Bornstein of the Performing Arts Center, the President’s Office, the Student Health Center’s Cindy Kreisberg, and Michael Baer and the entire Buildings and Grounds Department.
