The Bronx County Historical Society has selected Professor Herminio Martinez (Middle and High School Education) as its Educator of the Year. Professor Martinez, who is the executive director of the Bronx Institute at Lehman College, will receive the award on Sunday, June 10, in the garden of the Museum of Bronx History.
“I am much honored to be selected for this award,” said Professor Martinez. “I also accept it on behalf of the Institute’s dedicated and gifted staff and faculty members, who have done so much to improve the quality of life in the Bronx.”
Professor Martinez has led the Bronx Institute since 1998. Under his leadership, the Institute has become nationally recognized for its innovative and effective programs to promote academic excellence and educational opportunity for all Bronx students. Engaging Latino Communities for Education (ENLACE), a program for high-performing Latinos, and Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP), the Institute’s largest program, together serve over 6,000 middle and high school students in dozens of Bronx public schools.
