Lehman Professor Miguel Pérez will be the featured political analyst on Enfoque Nueva York (Focus on New York), a new monthly public affairs show on Telemundo, WNJU Channel 47,  beginning on Sunday, Nov. 6. He will discuss current political issues, such as the Occupy Wall Street movement and Hispanic voters in the 2012 Presidential election.

Professor Pérez, who chairs the Department of Journalism, Communication, and Theatre, regularly appears on the Spanish-language network as an “analista politico”—or political analyst. But Enfoque Nueva York, hosted by Telemundo anchor Jorge Ramos,  illustrates the network’s commitment to weekend news, after years of cutting back its news division.

“This program will give Jorge and I an opportunity to spend a little more time and dig a little deeper into the issues affecting the Hispanic community than we normally do on the daily news show,” Perez said. “I’m delighted to be a part of it.”

Born in Havana, Professor Pérez came to the United States as a refugee at the age of 11, not speaking any English. Going on to earn degrees from both Florida International University and the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, he has been a reporter for The Tampa Times and The Miami Herald, a columnist for the New York Daily News and The Record of Hackensack, N.J., and the host of three radio shows and three television programs in both English and Spanish.

For his Daily News columns, he won the Mike Berger Award, one of the top print journalism prizes in New York. For his newspaper articles, he won consecutive New York Deadline Club Awards in 2004 and 2005.

For his work on the radio, he won the two most coveted prizes for Spanish-language radio broadcasters in New York. He also received two regional Emmy nominations for his work on Images/Imagenes, a weekly English-language, Hispanic public affairs TV program on the PBS New Jersey Network. He also writes a nationally syndicated column for Creators Syndicate (http://www.creators.com/opinion/miguel-perez/archive.html).
