The Bronx Borough President’s first-ever Bronx Education Summit: From Cradle to Career will be held at Lehman on Saturday, October 15, from 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. The day-long event will bring together leaders in the field of education from across the city to present and discuss ideas to improve the city’s schools. Dr. Diane Ravitch, author of the book The Death and Life of the Great American School System: How Testing and Choice Are Undermining Education, will deliver the keynote address. An education historian, Dr. Ravitch is Research Professor of Education at New York University. She shares a blog called Bridging Differences with Deborah Meier, hosted by Education Week, and also blogs for Politico.com/arena and the Huffington Post. She has written several books on the American education system.
The day’s events will begin with registration from 8:30-9 a.m., followed by breakfast. President Ricardo R. Fernández will introduce Bronx Borough President Rubén Díaz, Jr. at 9:15 a.m. Pedro Noguera will follow up with remarks, as will Chancellor Dennis Walcott. Dr. Ravitch will then take to the podium to deliver her keynote address. The rest of the morning and afternoon will focus on workshops on early childhood education and special education.
David Banks, president of The Eagle Academy Foundation, will moderate the afternoon VIP panel conversation, titled “From Cradle to Career.” He will explore Bronx education issues from birth all the way up to higher education and career entry.
Panelists for this session will include Ernest Logan, president of the Council of School Supervisors and Administrators; Monica Major, Bronx Representative to the Panel for Educational Policy; James Merriman, CEO of the New York City Charter School Center; Michael Mulgrew, president of the United Federation of Teachers; Dr. Betty Rosa of the New York State Board of Regents; and Shael Suransky, Deputy Chancellor of NYC Public Schools.
